Like Alisha and Javan.

Javan is a firefighter at Station 8 in Oakland, right down the street from the studio. I sleep better at night knowing that he and his able crew are at the ready in case the studio should ever catch fire. Heaven forbid.

Javan and his lovely wife, Alisha, came to the studio with a classic and romantic vision in pink. Peonies, roses and ranunculus immediately come to mind. Peonies are a favorite wedding flower ~ I can’t even count all the times I see them featured in bridal magazines and blogs. But their window of availability is short ~ really only April through June. It’s disappointing when I have to tell brides that we won’t be able to source them for their wedding. So it’s especially nice when we can feature them in all their abundant glory.

Congratulations Alisha and Javan ~ thank you for allowing us to be a part of your wedding celebration!

Style Me Pretty ~ Little Black Book http://gingerleaffloral.com/site/2012/05/03/style-me-pretty-little-black-book/ http://gingerleaffloral.com/site/2012/05/03/style-me-pretty-little-black-book/#comments Fri, 04 May 2012 00:35:55 +0000 Ellen http://gingerleaffloral.com/site/?p=3400 I’m honored to have been invited into the Little Black Book from Style Me Pretty (SMP) ~ one of the best wedding blogs out there today. SMP wasn’t around when I got married, which is a darn shame since their blog is chock full of inspiration and wedding-related resources!

So here’s the skinny on how vendors are selected for the Little Black Book:

How do you choose the vendors for your Little Black Book?

The process to become a Little Black Book member is actually quite extensive.

First, we prefer recommendations by an SMP reader, a recent bride or an industry professional. We don’t simply look for a referral but rather for a passionate reason as to why a particular vendor deserves to be in the book. Perhaps the designer worked with a reader’s best friend when she was getting married, perhaps they have already designed the world’s most beautiful invitations for a particular bride and groom, perhaps an event planner we know shares with us the one photographer she will work with. Whatever the connection, it must be strong and based on a real knowledge of the vendor’s work. We also consider applications from interested vendors.

Second, we dive head first into the vendor’s business. Their portfolio, their experience, their time in the industry. We look at press that they’ve received, consult with their industry neighbors, get to know who they are and why they are good at what they do. Our Research Colleagues spend time conducting phone interviews with potential vendors, screening their personalities while getting to know them, singling out those we believe are truly devoted to their craft. For highly competitive industries, like photography and cinematography, we also have categorical vetting teams, comprised of style savvy professionals who can fairly, objectively, and accurately evaluate other artists’ work.

And finally, after feeling completely confident that a particular vendor is fabulous, we invite them to be a part of our book! It’s an invitation-only book that truly prides itself on its commitment to quality above all else.

Thanks to the Style Me Pretty crew for this very special honor!

Lerie Joy and Jason http://gingerleaffloral.com/site/2012/04/24/lerie-joy-and-jason/ http://gingerleaffloral.com/site/2012/04/24/lerie-joy-and-jason/#comments Tue, 24 Apr 2012 22:51:28 +0000 Ellen http://gingerleaffloral.com/site/?p=3296 Nothing says “spring” more than billy balls (also known as billy buttons or craspedia). These spherical little flowers lend a whimsical look wherever they pop their cheery heads, and were the main attraction for Lerie Joy and Jason’s beautiful spring wedding ~ that and the color yellow! The wedding took place at the stately Sainte Claire Hotel in (hot, hot, hot!) San Jose. What can I say ~ I’m always grateful when there’s air-conditioning for my flowery friends. They’re just happier that way  :-O. Here’s a sneak peak at Lerie Joy and Jason’s flowers ~ I can’t wait to share the rest of the images from the photographer!

National Charity League ~ Senior Presents http://gingerleaffloral.com/site/2012/04/11/national-charity-league-senior-presents/ http://gingerleaffloral.com/site/2012/04/11/national-charity-league-senior-presents/#comments Thu, 12 Apr 2012 00:44:35 +0000 Ellen http://gingerleaffloral.com/site/?p=3281 The Lamorinda Chapter of the National Charity League (NCL) held its Senior Presents gala a few weeks ago, and I had the opportunity to provide the floral arrangements for this wonderful event. NCL is a non-profit organization of mothers and daughters who join together in community involvement within local chapters throughout the United States.  Their goal is to foster a sense of community responsibility and strengthen the mother-daughter relationship. Daughters participate in a six-year program of philanthropic work, educational activities and cultural events, and the Senior Presents event was a celebration of that six-year commitment.

Twenty-four young women comprised the class of 2012, and each one held a bouquet of yellow roses and daffodils, which doubled as backdrop decor for the stage. Since the theme for the event was “branching out”, we incorporated yellow forsythia branches into the table arrangements. I big CONGRATULATIONS to each of these young women, now graduating high school, as they journey into new areas of their lives!

Tulip Extravaganza ~ Swirls of Spring http://gingerleaffloral.com/site/2012/03/27/tulip-extravaganza-swirls-of-spring/ http://gingerleaffloral.com/site/2012/03/27/tulip-extravaganza-swirls-of-spring/#comments Tue, 27 Mar 2012 17:23:59 +0000 Ellen http://gingerleaffloral.com/site/?p=3262 Mountain View Cemetery in Oakland held its 7th annual Tulip Extravaganza last week, and it’s always so much fun being a part of this great local event. The name says it all ~ tulips are the featured bloom in the wonderful displays designed by local floral designers, garden clubs and floristry schools. This year, my theme was “Swirls of Spring”, featuring tulip bulbs, xerographica tillandsia, moss and seeded eucalyptus. I’m pretty sure I used over 200 pins to secure all that moss and tillandsia! My little elf fingers do come in handy at times.

Spring Installation http://gingerleaffloral.com/site/2012/03/20/spring-installation/ http://gingerleaffloral.com/site/2012/03/20/spring-installation/#comments Tue, 20 Mar 2012 18:54:51 +0000 Ellen http://gingerleaffloral.com/site/?p=3251 We’re finally getting a break from the rain, but it seems fleeting based on this week’s weather forecast. I’m looking forward to the sunny (and warmer) days of spring! I just set up a permanent floral installation for one of my clients that will be up through mid-summer. It features willow branches, dyed loofah and silk flowers ~ working with the spring colors and whimsical loofah reminded me that sunnier days are just around the corner!

Bouquets to Art http://gingerleaffloral.com/site/2012/03/15/bouquets-to-art-2/ http://gingerleaffloral.com/site/2012/03/15/bouquets-to-art-2/#comments Thu, 15 Mar 2012 18:11:54 +0000 Ellen http://gingerleaffloral.com/site/?p=3228 The 28th annual Bouquets to Art is currently being held at the de Young Museum in San Francisco through this coming Saturday, March 17. This is the first year I’m participating in the event, and I couldn’t be more thrilled. Over 150 floral designers are each paired with a work of art that we’re asked to interpret through the medium of flowers and botanicals.

The painting I chose to interpret is Gottfried Helnwein’s “Epiphany II (Adoration of the Shepherds)”. It’s an incredibly dark piece (literally and figuratively), and the most difficult challenge was to come up with an interpretation that honored the complexity of the work. The artist has woven a version of the Adoration of the Magi with a scenario from the Third Reich, juxtaposing Nazi soldiers with a Madonna and Christ-like figures. Some have interpreted the piece as unconditional evil, the Third Reich, meeting conditional evil, the Catholic church, given Pope Pius XII’s alleged moral complicity during World War II by remaining silent while German atrocities were being committed. Some have also interpreted the Christ-like figure as representing Adolf Hitler.

"Epiphany II ~ Adoration of the Shepherds" | Gottfried Helnwein

The painting is huge (8′ by 10′), and while it’s beauty and subject matter draw you in from across the room, it’s not until you’re up close that you (may or may not) realize what kind of soldiers the men are. The ambiguity of the painting lent itself towards a conceptual interpretation. I chose the symbolism behind palm leaves to create multiple narratives. Palm branches traditionally represent triumph and victory over one’s enemies, and early Christians used the palm branch to symbolize the victory of the faithful over enemies of the soul. Palm is also waved (and weaved) on Palm Sunday to celebrate Jesus’ triumphant resurrection and entry into Jerusalem. Supporting materials include tillandsia, phalaenopsis orchids, ti leaves, seeded eucalyptus, statice and thistle.

Participating in Bouquets to Art has been an amazing experience, and I’m already looking forward to next year’s exhibit. It’s a wonderful opportunity to bridge the worlds of floral design and traditional art, and create something entirely new. History shows us that art and design are the physical manifestations, and legacies, of a culture. When we pair their permanence with flowers ~ ephemeral things which must be appreciated in the moment ~ I just have to sigh at the poetic beauty of it all…

Photo Shoot with Ceremony Magazine http://gingerleaffloral.com/site/2012/03/01/photo-shoot-with-ceremony-magazine/ http://gingerleaffloral.com/site/2012/03/01/photo-shoot-with-ceremony-magazine/#comments Thu, 01 Mar 2012 19:21:42 +0000 Ellen http://gingerleaffloral.com/site/?p=3207 Ceremony Magazine has come to the Bay Area and we’re excited to be a part of the inaugural San Francisco Bay Area edition! Our editorial photo shoot took place at Kohl Mansion, and the black and white Morning Room provided the perfect backdrop for our colorful florals (yes, I do love bold colors!). We wanted to complement the elegant and stately venue with rich, opulent florals, and featured phalaenopsis orchids, anthuriums, bells of Ireland, mitsumata branches, looped ti leaves and lily grass, and loofah. We loved the results, and look forward to collaborating with Ceremony Magazine on future photo shoots.

Thanks so much to Wildflower Linen for helping us bring the designs together with linens and chair covers, and to Classic Party Rentals for their elegant china and flatware. And we’re so grateful to Misti Layne Weddings for the wonderful photography and attention to detail.

What my Sister Says… http://gingerleaffloral.com/site/2012/02/21/what-my-sister-says/ http://gingerleaffloral.com/site/2012/02/21/what-my-sister-says/#comments Tue, 21 Feb 2012 18:52:12 +0000 Ellen http://gingerleaffloral.com/site/?p=3189 …is that I haven’t been posting enough pictures of recent floral work…apparently in my last couple blog posts I’ve been a bit chatty, and haven’t provided enough visuals. So in no particular order, and with no particular theme, are some of the floral “things” I’ve been up to lately  ;-) .

Bouquets to Art and Tulip Extravaganza http://gingerleaffloral.com/site/2012/02/07/bouquets-to-art-and-tulip-extravaganza/ http://gingerleaffloral.com/site/2012/02/07/bouquets-to-art-and-tulip-extravaganza/#comments Tue, 07 Feb 2012 17:51:54 +0000 Ellen http://gingerleaffloral.com/site/?p=3179 The 28th annual Bouquets to Art is being held at the de Young Museum in San Francisco March 13-17 ~ this one-of-a-kind event brings together over 150 floral designers and garden clubs to interpret works of art through the medium of flowers and botanicals. This will be the first year I’ll be participating in the event, and I couldn’t be more honored. Designers are chosen based on their body of work and references by current exhibitors, and proceeds from the event support education and special exhibition programming at the Museum. All the exhibitors visited the Museum a few weeks ago to choose the top 5 pieces we each wanted to interpret. Frankly, the process was agonizing ~ I kind of wish I were just assigned a piece at random. We don’t know which of our top 5 choices we’ll be interpreting until a few weeks before the event, so I definitely have not lost sleep fretting over the design. But I’m on a springboard ready to go :-O. My blog post on last year’s Bouquets to Art hopefully gives some insight into this amazing exhibition!

Spring also marks the 7th annual Tulip Extravaganza at Mountain View Cemetery in Oakland from March 23-25. Each year thousands of Dutch tulips bloom on the Cemetery grounds, and to celebrate the new season, dozens of local floral designers, garden clubs and floristry schools showcase their designs featuring the beloved spring flower. This will be my 5th year participating in the event, and I love the community connection ~ the Cemetery is literally 5 minutes away from my studio. The event is free and open to the public, and there will be live demonstrations by local floral designers. The Cemetery is a fantastic place to run, walk your dogs, or just stroll through to enjoy the thousands of blooming tulips. I once got separated from my group on a historical tour of the grounds, and it was one of the most pleasant experiences I’ve ever had while being lost  :-) .
